Purposeful Space

The MINDSET and PRACTICES

Because environment shapes culture, we create flexible classroom spaces to reflect students’ ideas and facilitate collaboration and independence.

TEACHER REFLECTIONS on STUDENT IMPACTS of ARTFUL TEACHING

“Students feel like this is their space and they can take ownership over it. They know how to be in the space with their bodies and how to treat each other in this space and also how to navigate the space and the materials.”

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • How clearly does the vision or purpose our classroom come through in how it feels and functions each day?
  • When have I noticed the  layout and flow of my room supporting collaboration, community, and ease of movement? When has it hindered it?
  • How responsive is our physical space to students’ sensory needs and physical comfort and where might small adjustments make a meaningful difference? How might that impact their learning?
  • Where and how can students see themselves—their identities, cultures, and interests—reflected in the environment I’ve curated?
  • How is student thinking documented in our space, and how does that visibility shape learning in the room?
  • Do I see my students taking ownership over where materials are, how to access them, and when to use them?
