Shifting Mindsets

TRANSFORMATIVE MINDSET SHIFTS ROOTED in VALUES

Staying rooted in values can also lead to transformative mindset shifts as teachers start to trust their instincts and gain the stability to pivot to new approaches and continue growing into the educator they want to be. Teachers described how their learning through Artful Teaching evolved their understanding of the role of the teacher, the true purpose of an education and the inequity by design in our school systems and beyond.

SHIFTING PERSPECTIVES on TEACHING

“I do think there was somewhere in there that the way that I saw my role as a teacher shifted…I think at some point I realized that it isn’t my job to manage my students. It’s my job to teach them how to manage themselves. And that was a huge mental shift. And I don’t know that the work can really be done until you get there.”

Shawna Puustinen

This provided me a way to open up my thinking about what was important in writing and in English and then work on finding alternative ways to have students learn those skills and show me those skills… We’ve been trained so often to do the mainstream college academic readiness. But really, if we want to get them ready for the world, being able to think creatively and act creatively and work cooperatively prepares them better for college.”
